Shooting Incidents at K-12 Schools (Jan 1970-Jun 2022)
Shooting Incidents charts are based on publicly available data on incidents from the beginning of 1970 through June of 2022 following the definition of each and every instance a gun is brandished, is fired, or a bullet hits school property for any reason, regardless of the number of victims, time of day, or day of week.

The School Shooting Database Project was developed from 2018-2022 as part of the Advanced Thinking in Homeland Security (HSx) pilot program at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS). In July 2022, on-going collection of the incident data was adopted by the independent project k12ssdb.org, and CHDS broadened its efforts to provide homeland security, emergency preparedness and school safety officials with resources and research by creating a larger compendium of school safety resources.
Database Research Team
- David Riedman holds a Masters in Homeland Defense and Security from the Naval Postgraduate School, is one of the co-founders of the Homeland Security Advanced Thinking Program (HSx), and teaches graduate courses in homeland security policy and critical infrastructure protection.
- Desmond O’Neill holds a Masters in Forensic Psychology, a Masters in Homeland Defense and Security from the Naval Postgraduate School, and is a co-founding member of Homeland Security Advanced Thinking Program (HSx).
