Preventing Violent Extremism with Targeted Intervention

In this Viewpoints, Mourad Mourad, Sergeant of Detective Squad with the NYPD, talks about his Master’s research on countering violent extremism (CVE).  He asks what law enforcement can do to get involved earlier and prevent an individual from going down a path of violent extremism, and suggests that stronger, earlier ties with community members can help identify individuals at risk well before incidents occur.  His work is looking at whether Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs), the public health model, and the NYPD neighborhood policing model can help current CVE programs.
