The Stress of Silence

Michael Pfaltzgraff from Anne Arundel County Fire Department studied the effects of no instructor guidance (tactical silence) on firefighter trainees during intense scenarios in his CHDS master’s thesis, “The Stress of Silence: Evaluating the Stress Induced by Tactical Silence During Firefighter Mayday Evolutions.” He found that this type of training can greatly enhance a new firefighter’s decision-making skills, suggesting it be a part of the training to handle high-pressure emergencies better.
