MI5 – The UK Security Service

Lecture/presentation.

In the midst of current national discourse concerning domestic intelligence responsibilities and the best intelligence solutions for the US, many have suggested that a MI5 style intelligence organization be created to supplant the FBI’s National Security Branch functions. MI5, the UK Security Service that has existed since 1909, is described as being “responsible for protecting the country against covertly organized threats to national security. These include terrorism, espionage and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.” In addition, they “provide security to a range of other organizations, helping them reduce their vulnerability to the threats.” This module serves as an overview of MI5, and provides commentary on security in the United States by comparison. Keywords: Domestic intelligence, FBI, MI5, National Security Branch, UK Security Service
