From Mark Mac Donnell – Sergeant/SDS, NYPD

“While working an Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City, I bumped into an old friend of mine whom I went to college with and joined the NYPD with. We were reminiscing about our college days when he began to tell me about the Naval Postgraduate School, Center for Homeland Defense and Security masters program he was attending. After he finished describing the program, I said to myself this sounds like something I have been looking for many years but never found it. Several days later, an NPS/CHDS application appeared in my mailbox at work and I knew it was a sign. I applied to the program and was eventually selected to join. It is a program where I was challenged and brought outside my small place within the homeland security enterprise. It has truly been an eyeopening experience and something I am extremely fortunate to have been a part of. It has broadened my horizons and is something I share my experiences with to my co-workers. Employers should take the opportunity to send their employees to the program as the return on investment is well worth it. The critical thinking skills, academic achievements and networking opportunities opens up avenues to both employers and employees to benefit from and something the next generation of homeland security practitioners can advance and learn from.”
