Nation’s Newest Homeland Security Advisors Participate in Seminar

Press Release

The nation’s newest homeland security advisors recently participated in an Executive Education Seminar that was specifically designed to facilitate discussion and debate amongst senior leaders in homeland security. The seminar was hosted by the Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS) and provided an opportunity for newly-appointed state homeland security advisors and the Governors Homeland Security Advisors Council, Executive Committee to explore the development of strategies, policies and organizational elements necessary to meet today’s homeland security challenges. The emphasis of the seminar included a focus on preparedness tools, adaptive organizations, and multipurpose strategies for homeland security leaders. The topics gave officials the opportunity to debate and discuss the topics at a strategy and policy level and to build relationships with their counterparts.

Officials from Arizona, Alabama, California, Colorado, Delaware, Guam, Iowa, Ohio, Michigan, Washington, and Massachusetts attended the seminar. Faculty from both CHDS and the Naval Postgraduate School presented on topics ranging from Islam to crisis communication.

"The policy discussions generated by CHDS instructors were invaluable to every homeland security official in attendance, were able to talk through the issues and apply them to our individual policies and practices," said Colonel Mike McDaniel, Governor’s Advisor for Homeland Security, Michigan. "The conference was unique, it merged new homeland security professionals with veteran homeland security professionals in order to build relationships and generate dialogue and discussions," said Director of the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, Glen Woodbury. "Although we do not have all the solutions, the attendees left with a better understanding of the challenges they face."

This is one of many types of executive level seminars CHDS offers to state, local, tribal, and federal DHS officials to promote interagency and intergovernmental cooperation.
