About this Site

This is a World Wide Web site for official business. The purpose of the CHDS site is to educate enrolled students. The Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's National Preparedness Directorate, FEMA.

Security

For site security purposes and to ensure that this service remains available to all users, this government computer system employs software programs to monitor network traffic to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, deny service, otherwise cause damage or access non-public information. Unauthorized attempts to upload information or change information are strictly prohibited and may be punishable under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986 and the National Information Infrastructure Protection Act. Information regarding possible violations of law may be provided to law enforcement officials.

Privacy and User Information

This site uses raw data logs and data log analysis software to determine how many users are accessing the site, which pages are the most popular, how users link to the site, what information is of most or least interest to our users, and overall system performance. The site also collects and stores information that may be volunteered by the user. Collected information is used to provide user-requested services and for research and analysis to operate and improve CHDS technologies and services. Types of information collected are:

  • Information you give us
  • Automatic log information collected in aggregate
  • Email communications you may choose to have with us

Details and Examples of User Information Collected

Automatic Log Information
When you visit the CHDS website, the server automatically records some information provided by your browser. This information is collected in aggregate and is not identified by or related to individual account names. Data collected is used to improve CHDS technologies and services and consists of: 1) The name of the domain from which users access the web; 2) The Internet Protocol (IP) address of a user's computer; 2) The date and time users access the site, and the length of each session; 2) The pages visited during a session; 2) The URL of the web site that referred a user to CHDS; and 2) Characteristics of user system configuration including browser type, operating system, monitor resolution, and connection speed.

Personal Information
CHDS is a password-protected website. From individual account holders, CHDS collects personal contact information, volunteered by the user, to 1) confirm that the user meets the conditions necessary to be granted access, 2) maintain the account, 3) notify the user of changes to the account or service, 4) determine eligibility of participation in CHDS educational programs, 5) evaluate the effectiveness of programs, program content, and technology. Data submitted by the user when applying to participate in a CHDS program may be shared with external NPS or DHS parties in order to evaluate eligibility to participate. If accepted into a program, participation may be tracked. Requests for information or assistance (as emails that may include the name and email address of that user) may be emailed to staff outside NPS or CHDS in order to provide the best assistance possible. If you email us with a question or comment, information you provide in that email will be used by CHDS staff for the purposes of answering your question and improving CHDS service.

Cookies

When account holders login to the CHDS website, the site sets session cookies to identify a user's session on the website. Our "cookies" are text files that have unique identifiers associated with them and are used to store and retrieve information that allow the site to securely recognize authenticated users. CHDS session cookies expire when the user exits the browser; the information is not collected or saved.

Copyright

Unless otherwise restricted by login, all information on this site is public domain and may be distributed or copied, unless specified as otherwise, and therefore subject to any indicated copyright restrictions and normally accepted procedures for properly crediting sources. Use of appropriate byline/photo/image credits is requested.

Accessibility

We are continually working to ensure this website is accessible to everyone who meets CHDS criteria for authorization. If you find a problem that prevents access, please contact us by sending an e-mail to the Webmaster. Unrestricted information that cannot be accessed will be provided in an alternative format.
